Great question. In theory, the strand pressing into the head can give you another point of contact to activate the shoulder into alignment. So rather than the head pushing, perhaps think more of the hand pressing the strand into the head. Doing the handstand with the head free is certainly fine and dandy, just as you are experiencing, takes more strength in that straight arm overhead alignment.
